A former independent director and mutual fund executive is putting his thoughts about fellow directors and the state of the industry in a new book: "Mutual Funds Today…Who’s Watching Your Money?" Dan Calabria, who has more than 40 years of industry experience, hopes his book will provide investors with information to make smart decisions about investing in mutual funds and also kick-start directors into recognizing their responsibility to shareholders. "In my opinion they are doing a less than satisfactory job," Calabria said of directors.
"Directors have to grow a spine and help shareholders."
The book, will point out a number of issues plaguing the industry that directors need to step up and do something about. These include the lack of annual shareholder meetings, the ever-pesky 12b-1 fees and the tsunami of revenues from which the industry is "suffering."
"I'm not suggesting anyone reduce revenues but I'm suggesting we pay more than lip service to break points and economies of scale," Calabria said.
The Reason for writing Mutual Funds TodayBased on my more than 40 years of experience in the mutual fund industry I decided to write “Mutual Funds Today…” for two different kinds of people – those who own mutual funds and those who don’t. You’ll find important information that will help shed a bright light on the factors that are important in cutting through the hype and spin that confronts you in making your investment decisions. Are annuities right for you? Do they make sense in the long term? Which kinds of mutual funds should you own and how do you make that decision? The book is intended to help investors put together a basic investment program based on sound, fundamental investment principles to help you achieve your investment goals. Designed to help guide you in obtaining information that’s not easy to obtain as it should be, you’ll find a clear, direct explanation of what you need to know to make intelligent decisions about your mutual funds. For example take advantage of the Glossary of Commonly Used Mutual Fund Terms that you can download from this site. That’s the first step in eliminating the jargon and understanding terminology that will help you achieve your goals. |
